In the planning phase of an investment, it is important that local communities are involved and able to actively and meaningfully participate in the negotiation and design of fair contracts. To be fully informed of their rights and adequately equipped to defend them, communities may need the support of NGOs, civil society organisations, paralegals, and independent facilitators.
